Large banana supplies force Ecuador to ship to Europe

Plenty of banana supplies in the U.S. have made for low prices for South American exporters. While the American market is steady, it's causing some shippers to focus more on the European market.

“Pretty much everything we're shipping is going out of the United States,” said Luis Orrantia of Tropical Specialists. “We've done a few containers to the U.S., but the prices aren't enough.” Favorable growing conditions have contributed to a good crop in Ecuador, where Tropical Specialists works with Durexporta to source its bananas, and with other banana-exporting countries having good crops, there's plenty of fruit available for buyers.

“It's just a problem with the market that there's too much volume” said Orrantia. “Bananas from Ecuador have very good quality, but people are buying on price. So we're shipping mostly to Europe.”
