Cadel, Karneval and Jonica apples

Special apples at the wholesale market in Frankfurt

The range of apples was expanded with the varieties Cadel, Karneval and Jonica at the fruit and vegetables wholesale market in Frankfurt in week 45. The loose apples in 10 kg crates from Nordbaden (Bruchsal) were met with great interest; the apples convinced the buyers with their appearance and taste and went for 0.80 to 0.90 Euro per kg.

The Cadel apple is a cross between a Jonathan and a Golden Delicious and originates from the former Yugoslavia. It is an attractive, easy to store apple and harvested from mid-October. The skin of the large apple is greenish yellow to yellow and is on 40% to 70% of its skin is a stripy bright red. The yellowish flesh is a soft to medium firm texture, juicy, sweet and flavorful. The taste strongly resembles that of Golden Delicious.

The Karneval apple is a cross between Vanda and Cripps Pink the new variety from the Czech Republic has been trading since 2013. This variety stores very well and is harvested from October. The round apple with white flesh is a specialty, because no apple looks the same while they all have the same typical look. The unusual skin color with the impressive red and yellow stripes is a real eye catcher. The typical slightly sour taste has the finest flavors. The apple is resistant against Rvi6 but slightly susceptible to powdery mildew and ideally suited to the garden.

The Jonica apple, a Jonagold mutation which has been selling since 1988. The apple scores points with its shelf life and is harvested from early to mid-October. This medium to large apple has an attractive flaming red skin color. The pleasant slightly tart taste is aromatic and clearly reminiscent of Jonagold. The apple can be eaten, but has also good cooking qualities and can be used in the preparation of cider and juice.
