Biocoop opens temporary 'package free' supermarket in Paris

Biocoop (a French chain with 357 organic grocery stores) opened a 100% package free supermarket in Paris on Tuesday, November 3rd. 250 products are for sale in this store, including fruits, vegetables, bread, meat, butter, yogurt and cheese. The focus is on local products. Customers can bring their own containers to take what they buy home with them.

"For those who did not think to bring their own containers, there are glass jars, bags made of organic cotton and 'algae bulbs' (which are made from 100% recyclable algae material) for sale," says the store's website. Biocoop wants to test, in real conditions, whether a store with only loose, unpackaged products could be a permanent development. The organic chain has been selling unpackaged products such as pasta, rice and cookies for 30 years in order to reduce the waste of packaging materials and food.

The pop-up store will be open until the end of December.
