Broker Richard Bolle:
"You almost have to pay the bale price to get onions"
Although broker Richard Bolle purchased onions last week, farmers show themselves to be steadfast. "You nearly have to pay the bale price to get onions. But that's understandable. Those guys have all been able to get 20 cents, and now the price level is just below that. They are also still busy on the land sowing wheat, ploughing and harvesting beets. They're not thinking about selling yet. But if packers want to build a stock, they have to get on board now. If they wait a few weeks, they pay the jackpot."
The broker is full of confidence. "I expect we can get back those 20 cents before Christmas. Brazil is already inquiring, which is a positive sign. Extra large onions can also be sold then, which could lighten the market somewhat. For the industry, quite a few onions are going to Poland for 8 cents gross off-land, and that's not a bad price either. In general, the quality is reasonably good, but a little less than last year. There are some more onions with thick necks, cracked bottoms and some fusarium. The tare percentage will be about three points higher than last year."
