According to the AgrarMarkt Austria (AMA) the AMI estimates an 8% lower harvest. In the EU-28 a production of 5.45 million metric tons is expected in the season 2015-2016. This a decrease of 8% compared to the previous season. Therefore a lower onion harvest is expected in the majority of the EU countries.
Since the harvest period in some countries had not finished prior to the date of the survey they are still estimates. The development of the production shows a strongly differentiated curve. The harvest in Northern and Western Europe turns out to be better. A disproportional large decline of the harvest occurs in Austria, Spain and Poland. Germany expects a smaller harvest too, however not on the same scale. France and Denmark expect an increase.
The onions in the UK were exposed to completely different weather conditions. And despite the cold weather the harvest should reach the level of the previous years. The situation in the Netherlands remains unclear, as the later harvested onions were excellent. In Russia the acreage increased, the trade embargo and the high prices were the main reasons for the increase. But even in Russia a lower yield is expected, yet the harvest is expected to be at last year's level. Unsuitable storage conditions and the related uncertainties about the shelf life change future prospects.
