Fast system to identify immigrant contamination in pallets

As the immigrant situation continues todisrupt the flow of fresh produce into the UK, one company is testing a method of reducing timeand produce wasted due to contamination.

Techno Fresh Consultancy have been conducting trials and benchmarking this system for some time for the use in contaminated consignments of fresh produce.

During the Olympics this technology, (ATP hygiene monitors) was used to check eating establishments for contamination, accordingto Richard Gasgin, this was the first Olympic games where no cases of food poisoning were reported.

"We are now confident we can offer a safe and professional service to identify pallets within a consignment that are clean and untouched and those with light or heavy contamination," explains Richard Gaskin, Managing Director at Techno Fresh.

"This system should not be used for consignments that are heavily contained with urine or faeces these should be written off and destroyed, however it is ideal for consignments that have light damage when stowaways have gained access to the trailer for a short while and been quickly removed," according to Gaskin. "Often trailers have been broken into, the driver has realised that something is wrong and called the police, we have also seen consignments destroyed when the trailer doors have been opened in Calais the driver has stopped people entering the trailer however the consignment has still been destroyed as the seal has been broken."

Techno Fresh Consultancy have an agreement with George Hammonds in Dover for a joint venture, in most instances a driver will know that he has had stowaways in the trailer as they have been removed in Calais by the UK or French Boarder Force. This then gives the opportunity for the consignments to be assessed in Dover and any contaminated pallets to be removed and the consignment made safe for onward travel, saving cost in fuel, time and the loss of sales.

"For those consignments that we have been involved with have generated some very positive feedback from the clients," states Gaskin.
