The president of the Republic of Costa Rica, Luis Guillermo Solis, recently met with business representatives and appointed a technical forum to discuss whether the technical closure that Costa Rica applied to Mexico's Hass avocado is scientifically viable.
To this end, the forum, which is formed by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Luis Felipe Arauz, and an external pathologist scientist who has no relationship with the State Phytosanitary Service, will analyse the risk of importing avocados from Mexico, as the country has a plague that affects the production of this fruit.
The director of the SFE, Francisco Dallanese, and the Minister of Foreign Trade, Alexander Mora, which have been involved in bilateral negotiations with Mexico, won't be part of the forum.
The president of the National Chamber of the Food Industry, José Manuel Hernando, said that if Costa Rica reached a bilateral agreement with Mexico, the process before the World Trade Organization would be stopped and the risk that they denounce would be avoided.
Currently, the process is with the Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures of the WTO.
