Albertsons reports strong Q2 growth

Lenta plans 3 new stores in Southern Russia
Supermarket Lenta will be the anchor tenant in the new shopping center Pioneer in Barnaul, located in the far South of Russia, announces ryb.ru. "A new layout theory has been developed there just recently and has been successfully implemented in the shopping centers of Irkutsk and Novokuznetsk.” The decision that Lenta will be the retailer for the Pioneer shopping center, has been the result of negotiations between Lenta and Novosibirsk consulting company Globus Broker. The opening is planned for spring 2016. In the capital of the Altai Territory three branches of the retail chain Lenta will open. Green areas with seating are planned at their locations.

Aldi and Lidl pick up pace as UK supermarket price wars deepen
Discounters Aldi and Lidl stepped up their march across the UK supermarket industry in the last 12 weeks as the impact of price cuts by the country’s large grocers faded. Lidl’s sales rose 18% and Aldi’s by a similar amount through October 11, researcher Kantar Worldpanel said in a statement Tuesday, stronger than in the previous month. (esmmagazine.com)

Grocer Albertsons reports strong second quarter growth
Less than a week after pulling a multi-billion dollar initial public offering effort, supermarket giant Albertsons reported encouraging fiscal second quarter sales trends that may help the private equity backed company revive interest in its shares. On Tuesday evening, Albertsons reported 4.4% same store sales growth, driven by 9.7% growth at stores it acquired from Supervalu in 2013 and 4.8% growth from stores it bought from Safeway. ‘Huge potential’ in online grocery market, says IGD

According to IGD forecasts, 42% of grocery shoppers in the UK could be converted to online shopping, with a quarter (26%) now saying they have shopped online for groceries in the last month versus a fifth (22%) in 2010. IGD said the research, unveiled at its Online & Digital Summit this week, highlights huge opportunities for growth, with online set to be the fastest-growing part of the UK grocery market over the next five years, doubling in value from £8.9bn in April 2015 to £17.2bn by April 2020. Russian supermarket wins suit against pro-Kremlin activists
Moscow's upscale Azbuka Vkusa supermarket chain has won a case against pro-Kremlin activist Margarita Cherkashina, assistant head of the “Eat Russian” movement that raided supermarkets in search of banned products, the Kommersant newspaper reported Tuesday. (themoscowtimes.com)

US: Fresh Market grocery retailer possibly for sale
The Fresh Market, Inc. said Tuesday it will conduct a strategic and financial review of its business that could lead to a sale of the specialty grocery retailer. The Greensboro, North Carolina-based company also said the review could result in The Fresh Market continuing "to pursue value-enhancing initiatives" as a standalone company. Fresh Market officials said there are no assurances the strategic and financial review will result in any specific action. The officials said the company doesn't intend to. (greenvilleonline.com)

US: Target to partner with MIT on city farming

Target this week announced a multi-year partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and global design firm IDEO that will focus on the future of food, looking at everything from urban farming to supply chain and food transparency. The three partners will, among other things, use data to monitor how the public discussion about food is evolving and get a leg up on how food will be grown, consumed, and sold in the next 15 years. Target CEO Brian Cornell has made vastly improving the retailer’s food assortment a top priority. (fortune.com)

UK consumers save £58 thanks to supermarket war

The supermarket price war shows no signs of abating according to analysts Kantar Worldpanel, whose latest figures show households with a year-on-year saving of £58 on average, a fact which means £1.5bn has been taken out of the market in the last year. (pig-world.co.uk)

Spar expands operations in Africa
Spar International has revealed plans to grow its presence in Africa with confirmation that the brand has opened its first store in Cameroon. The move comes just a week after opening a supermarket in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. Spar has reported that it has seen a 10% increase in retail selling area in the last five years and now operates in ten markets. The company already operates 17 retail stores in Douala and capital city Yaoundé, along with six distribution facilities across the country. Planning is already underway on the next three Spar sites in Cameroon including a Hypermarket in Yaoundé. (esmmagazine.com)

UK: Waitrose boss Mark Price quits to 'head Channel 4'
The boss of Waitrose has quit the John Lewis-owned supermarket chain and is said to be lined up as the next chairman of Channel 4. John Lewis said Mark Price will leave in April after 33 years at the employee-owned retailer. Price is the managing director of Waitrose and deputy chairman of its parent company, the John Lewis Partnership. Price is the leading candidate to take over as head of Channel 4 when Lord Burns, the current chairman, steps down, Sky News reported. If appointed, Price will lead the broadcaster through a potential £1bn privatisation. (theguardian.com)

Online retail sales are picking up in China

Online retail sales of goods and services were up 2,591.4bn yuan, increasing 36.2% year-over-year. The online retail sales of physical goods, food, clothing, and other commodities went up by 42.7%, 26.3%, and 37.7%, respectively. (marketrealist.com)

US: Google expands grocery delivery in Wisconsin
Google Express announced it expanded its next-day delivery service area on Tuesday to cover the Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Wausau, Marshfield and Stevens Point areas. Google Express will only deliver non-perishable items.  (greenbaypressgazette.com)

Japan supermarket sales rise further in September
Supermarket sales, after adjustment, rose 2.9% year-over-year in September, faster than the 2.0% climb in the preceding month. Before adjustment, sales grew 2.2. Japan's supermarket sales continued to increase in September, a report from the Chain Store Association showed Wednesday. (lse.co.uk)
