According to Eduardo Carles, director of the Institute of Agricultural Marketing (IMA), the institution will disburse payments to onion producers this week.
Carles said, "we had already worked with them on some dates, but there were administrative errors in some documents that were not filled." He also added that, after correcting the mistake, the procedures for both independent onion producers and onion producers grouped in a cooperative had been endorsed.
According to the director of the IMA, the amounts are $400,000 dollars for onion growers grouped in a cooperative, which were already handed $13,000, and another $112,000 for independent producers.
He clarified that, while the payment had been endorsed, the documents had to be submitted to the National Bank, which should generate the checks from the trust administered by the IMA.
After the onion producers protested on Friday at the Pan American highway, Carles said: "We are evaluating alternatives for the next harvest."
Among these alternatives, he said, is the ban on onion imports during harvest, which is in force via a resolution issued four months ago. He also added that they were seeking mechanisms so producers could move to the fairs and trade chain without intermediaries.
