Herman Hoogendoorn, Nature's Pride:

"Ripening pears meets a demand"

Last year, Nature's Pride expanded its Ready to Eat (RTE) product range with pears, after the mangoes, avocados and papayas. At the moment, one of the forty ripening chambers is equipped for the new Dutch Doyenne du Comice pears, which are marketed ready to eat under the brand EAT ME in the striking purple sticker that comes with it.

"Ripening Dutch pears seems like a contrast with ready-to-eat exotics like mangoes, avocados and papayas, but consumers also want to enjoy a juicy pear with the right brix. People have a clear need to consume fruit directly after buying it, and the pears that are sold at the moment are often not ripe enough," says Herman Hoogendoorn.

"Last year, there were plenty of promotions with pears in Dutch retail, as a result of the Russian boycott, and market circumstances in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe weren't favourable. Nevertheless, our ready-to-eat pears were well-received, and customers were pleased with sales. And those customers are now asking if we have the ready-to-eat pears available again," Herman goes on to say. "Clients and consumers expect Nature's Pride and the EAT ME brand to have the tastiest products of the highest quality, and Doyenne du Comice meets those demands."

"Nature's Pride was a pioneer in 2006 when it invested in ripening facilities for mangoes, avocados and papayas. We expanded our Ready to Eat family with pears last year, and since this summer with kiwis. Consumer demand for convenience products continues to grow, and with it the ready-to-eat segment as well. So who knows what's next in this product range," Herman concludes.
