Mexico: Driscoll's assumed commitments

The Driscoll's Company, a leader in berry exports, committed itself to promote specific issues, such as: respect for the environment, safety, social security, health, and safety for the thousands of workers employed by the company. The company made these commitments after the visit and working meeting that a group of municipal officials, headed by the mayor of Los Reyes, Jesus Alvarez Hernandez, made to the company.

The company agreed with the council of Los Reyes on a pact for the environment that includes a reforestation plan, care of the wild species that live in the strawberry crops, and taking care of the area’s ecological balance; although they recognized that the use of insecticides in orchards broke this balance. However, they stated they would ask the laborers to respect the wildlife at their workstations, and that they would monitor their behavior to ensure they respect the environment.

The company also agreed to, in coordination with the municipality, keep the roads where they take out the harvest and the areas surrounding the strawberry crops free from litter, observing good agricultural practices to avoid the workers and laborers from contaminating, and respecting safety measures.
