Malaysia: Exotic fruit popsicles a natural treat

As more people become aware of the health benefits of coconut and coconut-based products, the popularity of Malaysian popsicles made with coconut milk has grown. Known as ais potong in Malaysia, the treats can now be found in a number of Asian markets.

“Coconut is good for health, and as people choose to eat healthier, you have products like coconut water which is selling like hotcakes,” said Kin Ying of DIC Trading. Her company has been making and selling seven different varieties of the coconut-milk popsicles for the past 12 years. The popsicles are popular partly due to the fact that most of the ingredients are fruit based instead of flavoring chemicals.

“We are also developing new exotic fruit varieties, such as mango, pineapple and bananas which are still in research and development stage” said Kin Ying. The varieties sold highly dependence on consumer preferences. In Malaysia, the red bean is the most popular, whereas in China, where DIC Trading has been shipping the treats for the past three years, durian is among the most popular variety. As matter of fact, Malaysia produces the BEST durian in the world, which is exported to Asian countries.

“Red beans blend very well with the coconut milk, that's the reason why Malaysian enjoy it,” said Kin Ying. Partly because fresh durian is readily available in Malaysia, preference would be fresh fruit over any kind of iced durian-flavored dessert. As distribution expands, the varieties will also increase.

“We are exporting to China now,” said Kin Ying, “but we would like to take the product to other markets.”
