China: switch to organic farming in Anhui province

The Lihua Specialized Fruit Association in Dangshan County is the only farmers association in Anhui province that enjoys autonomous rights to import and export fresh products. Its fruits are exported to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and other South East Asian markets. This February, the central government has approved the association's status as a National Organic Food Production Base.

As a first step, standardisation of organic production has been implemented to meet international standards. Each fruit tree has been given its own identity card which states the breed, a serial number and details of the grower. Recently, seven fruit growers covering a total of 4,700 hectares (70,000 mu) in the county have received Green Food organic approval, including 4,000 hectares (60,000 mu) of crisp pears and 700 hectares of peach orchards (10,000 mu).
