Still no agreement at Ceres Fruit growers

Despite on-going negotiations since July 22, 2015 between Ceres Fruit Growers (CFG) and the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU), no agreement has been reached to end the strike action and the accompanying intimidation of workers who want to return to work, says Francois Malan, CFG Managing Director.

“We have acted in good faith but have to believe now that FAWU and other non-stakeholders are using this normal industrial wage dispute to further their own agendas and cannot be seen to be acting in the interests of their members and CFG employees.

“CFG has been at a standstill, we have suffered arson and continued intimidation. Despite our latest offer, which includes a package increase of 9.5%, FAWU is dragging its heels.

As one of the larger employers in Ceres, CFG and all our people and livelihoods are now at risk,” he says.

Many workers, FAWU and non-FAWU members, have indicated their willingness
to return to resume their duties and to accept management's last offer. Unfortunately, they say that they are being intimidated and threatened by FAWU
shop stewards and striking members, according to CFG.

From the events described above, it is evident that CFG has been committed to the
negotiation process and has negotiated in good faith. The total package increase
exceeds 10% for workers, which under the current economic climate, is more than a
fair offer. FAWU however, has not displayed the same commitment to reach a fair
agreement said CFG in a statement.
