Hans Maagendans, Banafood:

"Banana sales aren't bad, but certainly aren't wild"

The banana market is calm at the moment. "The market goes up a bit after August, but traditionally doesn't reach the level of before the summer," says Hans Maagendans of ripery Banafood Services GmbH from Straelen. "The weather conditions are quite favourable and the sales aren't bad, but aren't wild either."

"The prices on the free market are at a low level with 12.50-13.50 Euro and I don't see them going up just like that either. It will soon be the autumn holidays and that also influences the market. The supply is good. There are sufficient bananas coming in and good volumes are also expected for weeks 42 and 43."

Hans says there isn't an increased demand from Asia at the moment. "At the moment the offer prices in Ecuador are low too. Not a lot of bananas are being bought from Asia. A country like China is focussed on its own production at the moment. We just need to have a little patience. November and December aren't banana months."
