Shanghai: tracing origin of fresh produce online

From October the first, consumers in Shanghai can trace the product information, origin and processing history of agricultural products bought in local supermarkets.

A 20-digit food safety tracing code has been introduced on packaging labels. With this code, consumers can go to the website of the Shanghai Food Safety Authority (www.shfda.org) and trace the origin of the product.

Currently potatoes, peas, tomatoes, chilli peppers and winter melons can be traced. From December onwards, bananas and apples will be added. In the future the Authority has vowed to widen the scope of the project.

Food safety is a widespread issue in China. Local and national authorities are trying to find solutions to ensure product quality and to reassure the public.
