"Leon van den Hombergh: "Slightly bigger supply this year"

Trend seedless mini watermelons continues

The trend toward ever smaller watermelons has been here for some time, but seems to be continuing even stronger now with the 'personal watermelons'. "After the success of past seasons, fortunately we have a slightly bigger supply of these mini watermelons this season," says Leon van den Hombergh of Frankort & Koning. "Our Brazilian partner Agricola Famosa has further developed the seedless mini watermelons, and now we're seeing brix values and flavour having an even higher level than previous years."

"The characteristically high vitamin levels have also been retained, and with the low calorie values, the watermelon fits almost every diet. The big advantage of these mini watermelons is seen in sales. The consumer is more willing to buy this watermelon. The sales price per unit is a lot more attractive, and retailers also find the smaller fruit works better on the shelves. The average fruit weighs between 1500 and 2000 grammes at the moment, and is packaged in a 10 kg box. The seedless flesh is a beautiful bright red, and firm. From week 41 onwards, we will receive these mini watermelons on a weekly basis."
