Tjerk Nagel, Konaxx Onions:
Onion prices under pressure
This year the onion harvest in Friesland, the Netherlands is above average, "We have had rain, but not as much as in other agricultural areas and it certainly did not lead to major problems with the harvest. The onions are of good quality," says Tjerk Nagel from Konaxx Onions in Sint Jacobiparochie, the Netherlands.
"We had a 'weather market' for a time. Now the prices are under pressure because everything is being offered at the same time. This has an impact on prices, but I am convinced that things will work out," continues Tjerk.
"So far a great deal has been sold. Africa has remained on the market. Brazil is out due to the current economic conditions, but that is no reason to panic. The onion market is known for its ups and downs and now we are waiting to apply for a new round."
