"Prices rising and strengthening"
Availability has reduced
In terms of the weather, the last couple of days have been mixed for Greece and the Aegean. Colder temperatures and rain has left its mark. “The availability of the products has been limited,” the professional explains. “Due to the weather being mixed at the moment, there were partial losses in production. Because of this, the offered quantity of Greek table grapes is also declining at the moment. Finally, this also causes less exportable products to be produced for the German market.”
According to the importer, the current market situation cannot be compared to the previous weeks. “The market has developed positively. We shall see how it will develop further. This depends entirely on the weather and the availability of the products,” says the importer from Munich. “The demand is currently stable, and even rising slightly”.
“Winterpack”
Because of the progressed season in Greece, only tunnel products are still available. “The products from Greece are packaged and exported in so-called “winterpacks”. The Italians will also begin with this in a week or two, and then only winterpack products will be available,” the expert explains. “Winterpack is a bit more costly for the producers, which in turn affects the price.”
Availability depends on weather and sales
“Table grapes from Greece will definitely be available during the coming four to five weeks,” the importer explains. “However, we will have to see how the weather and sales will develop. There may be products available for six more weeks even, but currently this is pure speculation.” Towards the end of October, and following the Greek and Italian table grape season, the importers will switch to products from overseas, for example from Brazil.
