Algeria’s first prickly pear unit opens

The first Algerian processing unit specialising in prickly pears has opened in Sidi-Fredj (Souk Ahras). The site, which was a private investment, covers 5,000m2 and can process 20 quintals an hour. Packaging, production of essential oils and pharmaceutical products, juice, jam and cattle feed are all treated on site. The unit has 30 full time employees and 200 seasonal workers, as well as field workers. Mr Mohamedi, Head of the site, says that 10,000 hectares of prickly pears are farmed in the Souk Ahras area.
