US(GA): Will East Coast storm impact eggplant supplies?

As the seasons in Michigan and New Jersey wrap up, supplies of eggplant will come down in the coming weeks. If severe weather on the East Coast disrupts production in North Carolina, then supplies will be significantly limited as it will be up to Georgia to account for most of the supply.

“The market is fairly cheap right now because, though there is average production, there is product coming from a lot of regions,” said Eric Bolesta of Ken Corbett Farms. “Product is moving, but with Michigan and New Jersey trying to put product wherever they can, eggplant is pretty cheap.” On October 1, prices for a carton of medium eggplant from South Georgia were between $8.35 and $8.85. Those prices are almost certain to increase as supplies in the North wind down.

Storm could boost prices further
“Retailers are moving this way,” said Bolesta, “so I think prices will increase by the end of next week.” North Carolina's season is also in full swing, but a storm that might hit the East Coast could halt or slow production there. If that's the case, then supplies will dip further and prices will be higher.

“The storm could hit the Carolinas and impact production,” said Bolesta. “Even without the storm, prices are going to go up. But if the storm stops production over there, then price increases will be even greater.”
