Argentina: Lettuce plantation containing unauthorized agrochemical destroyed

After inspecting a farm located in the town of El Boqueron, the National Food Safety and Quality (SENASA) and the Department of Food Science of the municipality of General Pueyrredón detected the presence of an agrochemical residue that is not authorized for lettuce cultivation, and oversaw the destruction of a plantation to prevent it from being marketed and to prevent the consequent health risk to the consumer.

After receiving the confirmed positive results on September 24th, the authorities proceeded to destroy a 450 square meter plantation of lettuce because it was unsafe for human consumption.

The task was part of a control measure initiated during the previous week at the Central Market of General Pueyrredón, where authorities found unlabelled merchandise being sold that, in the case of seven crates of lettuce, presented inconsistencies once their residues were analysed.

Subsequently, the authorities tracked the product's traceability and the seller at the market provided details of the producer, so the agents proceeded to perform complementary monitoring to determine whether the produce at the field was also outside the regulated parameters.

It is worth noting that these tasks are carried out jointly under the municipality's Municipal Sampling, Waste Control, Chemical and Biological Contaminants in Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Products Program.
