Poland sees opportunities for soft fruit and vegetables in Italy

The Polish fruit and veg sector has received EU subsidies for years, which has been a great help for growers from that country, says Anna Gabler of Polish company Grupa Owoce Natury, which is part of the EWA BIS Group. Together with various other Polish companies, she visited Italian trade show Macfrut for the first time this year. "Through EU subsidies, we were able to invest in good machinery and to supply high-quality fruit and vegetables."

Export growth
The Ewabis company supplies fresh fruit and vegetables, frozen products (IQF) and juice concentrates. "We have been exporting to Italy for a number of years now, and notice that the export is growing here. The country itself supplies a lot of top fruit already, so demand is high for vegetables and soft fruit in particular. In Poland, production of blueberries is on the rise, and Italy could be an interesting buyer."

Various large producer organizations supply their products to Grupa Owoce Natury. "Our number one product is the apple, both for the fresh market and the processed market, followed by soft fruit and vegetables. Our strength is that we have a stable and large production, which means we can make clear agreements about the volumes we are able to supply." The group's clients are mainly located in the Balkans. Other markets are Southern Europe, Eastern Europe and Scandinavian countries.
