Chinese onion prices rising

The onion harvest is coming to an end in Gansu province, one of the most important onion producing areas in China. Onion purchase prices are rising and demand is increasing, especially from export countries such as South East Asia, Japan and Korea.

Onions from Gansu have started to be sold to Central Asia and Russia. It is expected that the export to Nepal, India and other South Asian markets will increase in the future. Currently, 60% of onions are exported, an increase from 40% compared to last year.

Gansu onion prices have risen because cultivation areas were reduced by 2,000 hectares compared to last season. Total harvest volume is expected to reach 1,100,000 tons, about 100,000 tons less than last year. Onion production in main export markets has decreased as crop yield dropped due to high temperatures and drought. Demand for export has risen as a result.

Prices of yellow onions between 7 and 8 cm in size hover between 1,100 and 1,400 Yuan per ton. The average price is 1,250 Yuan/ton, 400 Yuan/ton higher than during the same period last year.

The price of red onions bigger than 7 cm is 1,550 Yuan/ton, which is 350 Yuan/ton higher than last season.
