Potato harvest 2015: only average

With regards to weather, 2015 consisted of: draught, heat, heavy rainfall, hail – a bit of everything, at inopportune times and in different intensities across different regions – a challenge for the potato farmers. Nevertheless, it was established at the 64th potato fall-exchange that there are sufficient potatoes available in 2015/2016 for all purposes and uses.

According to an announcement by the Federal Ministry for Nutrition and Agriculture, 234,100 hectares of potatoes were ordered in 2015. That is 6.5% less surface area than the perennial average. With this the share of potato growing on the croplands dropped to under 2%. According to the current information, on average 421 dt/ha are harvested, of course with large regional differences. According to statements by the Sachverständigenausschusses von Bund und Ländern, the gross harvest will be around 9.9 million tons. The storage facilities are ready to take the harvest in, and provide the German market with high-quality domestic products for as long as possible, also when the currently expected harvest quantity is 9.9% under the perennial average. These numbers are however preliminary, since the harvest has not finished yet.

The potato harvest that grew in the European environment was also normal to below average. Here, the differences in yield between countries and regions were also considerable, depending on the weather. According to estimates by NEPG, a gross harvest of 32 to 33 million tons is expected, among which 24.5 million tons of consumer potatoes from the 5 northwestern European growing countries of the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Great Britain and Germany. With this, the estimated harvest quantity for consumer potatoes lies around 2.9% below the five-year average in NEPG.

DKHV chairman Thomas Herkenrath, who greeted around a 150 guests, 17 exhibitors, as well as countless supporters, to the 64th international potato fall exchange, emphasized in his opening speech that utilization of all harvested tubers is the top priority for the potato industry. With great care and high expertise, the farmers have produced a healthy, safe and sustainable food product, which altogether enjoys a high esteem. The industry invests a lot across all of Europe to strengthen the consumer’s trust in the potato, and thus to create a secure future for the potato industry. Transparent production and intensive communication with consumers and media are important. Only in this fashion can society’s awareness of the advantages and variety of potato products be maintained. The DKHV is available as a competent contact any time.

The guests of the potato-fall exchange could not only inform themselves about new developments on the potato market and its environment, but also about new ideas and concepts as to how the potato can be presented in a modern form. There were many suggestions for a modern image of the potato, tailor-made for young people.
