Vietnam: Pitahaya exports to Europe bound to increase in the future

MTAS Fresh is a Vietnam-based company devoted to the production and trade of agricultural products, with farms devoted to mangoes, passion fruit and pitahaya, located in the western part of Vietnam. Europe is the major destination for the company.

According to, President Mr Kyle Than, “The competition is very tough and the reason for this increase in popularity is three-fold. Firstly, it is easy to grow, since it does not require any special land or soil, there is also the certainty that it will sell and the grower will make a good profit, and thirdly, it can be harvested after a year and a half, unlike mangoes, which take 3 to 5 years to grow. You can also continue harvesting for about 15 years.”

The MTAS Fresh offers both varieties: the white and the red-fleshed. Mr Than explains that the white one is easier to grow, which makes it cheaper. “Europe (Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, etc.) and other markets all prefer the red-fleshed, which unlike the white, it is not produced year-round. As a producer, we have some advantages: a traditional knowledge about growing pitahaya, as well as low production costs, which make us very competitive.”

Despite difficulties in the export process, especially during the rainy season, when there is a high risk of fungus appearing and pesticides cannot be sprayed on the fruit intended for export to Europe, MTAS Fresh is managing to ship approximately two containers per week. “We spend more in organic pesticides and fertilizers to keep our trees stronger against fungus and other diseases.” The erratic price of the fruit, which can drop very quickly, can be another hurdle.

Than explains that all of the company’s fruit is certified by Global G.A.P. and meets every EU requirement in terms of phytosanitary standards. He also believes that the product is bound to become more common in the coming years, as it contains plenty of vitamins and antioxidants, so it is very good for your health.
