Mexico: Colima produced 12,000 tons of green chiles in 2014

According to the Agricultural Production Statistical Yearbook of the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), which is prepared by SAGARPA, in 2014 Colima produced 12,954.24 tons of green chiles in 401 hectares. The municipality with the most area devoted to this crop is Manzanillo, followed by Tecomán, Armeria, and the capital.

The SIAP also stated that, up to August 2015 the production has amounted to 14,613 tons, which have been harvested from 503 hectares, i.e. an average of 29 tons per hectare.

Meanwhile, the average performance per hectare in 2014 was 32 tons, as there was a smaller surface devoted to the crop. The SIAP also stated that total production in 2014 was worth about 78,142 pesos.

According to SAGARPA, Mexico produces 2.2 million tons of green chiles a year and it is the second most important producer country in the world. Mexico exports 370,000 tons of green chiles annually.

Nearly 12,000 farmers are engaged in the cultivation of green chiles, although Mexico cultivates 50 varieties of this vegetable.

Per capita consumption amounts to nearly ten kilos per year and the major producing states are: Sonora, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi and Michoacan.
