Mexico: Agropark to increase productive soil by 14%

Agropark projects to end the year with 120 productive hectares in the State, reaching 66.6% of its installed capacity of 180 hectares of the agro-industrial estate located in Colon.

To achieve this goal, Agropark plans to add 15 hectares more of productive land this year, said the general director of Agropark's Association of greenhouses AC's, Saul Baez Hernandez.

He said that they would be able to enhance their productivity and achieve 100% of their capacity within two to three years, because as of 2016 they will have 60 hectares available.

So far in the year, the company has managed to reach 115 hectares of production and they expect to achieve the installation of five more during the rest of the year.

Baez Hernandez said the agro-industrial complex grew between 10 and 15 hectares per year thanks to the contribution of 12 companies.

Projects on stand by
Meanwhile, the development of the second stage of Agropark, a venue with a capacity to plant 500 hectares; i.e. 2.7 times greater than the 180 hectares that make up the current complex, is still a project.

"We have a second stage of 500 hectares across from the Park, but it is a project that still requires many things. The project as such already exists. It might take five or six years to develop this park, we have already spent eight years on it; there's still a long way to go," he stated.

Quality Production
Currently, 91% of the 12 companies in Agropark are national and only one is a foreign investment.

These firms mainly produce tomatoes in different varieties, peppers and cucumbers, 90% of which are exported to the United States and Canada and only 10% are sold in the domestic market.

"The greatest expectation has always been having more productivity to achieve a greater profitability. The goal is to continue producing quality products, so we do not have any problems with emerging markets, especially with the competition and natural commercial windows we have both in this country and in the countries that trade with the United States and Canada", he added.
