Rick van de Ven, ZON:
Cold weather pushes up iceberg lettuce prices
The cold weather has resulted in a substantial price increase in iceberg lettuce, "Supply was good, but since the cold weather appeared last Monday the availability in Europe has fallen sharply and it has become difficult to get the desired weights," says Rick van de Ven, who is responsible for iceberg lettuce sales at ZON.
ZON's iceberg lettuce acreage has decreased over the years, but they still have 494 acres of iceberg lettuce, most of which is exported, "The Netherlands has around 7,413 acres of iceberg lettuce and only a few hundred of those acres remain within the country. The export demand comes from a variety of destinations, from the U.K. to Scandinavia, Germany, Italy and Poland."
"In terms of quality the season is doing well. Price wise it has not been the best season, but if we can maintain the current price level, we can still make it a good season," continues Rick.
