Online marketplace for Foodsharing

Farmilio expands his online marketplace

Farmilio, the marketplace for food products from local farmers, is expanding its platform for supporting Foodsaving offers. Private individuals, restaurants and retail traders who have food left over can advertise them for free, and buyers can find local offers on the website.

Food rescue, food sharing and waste reduction has been an intensely discussed theme for some time now. Background is that around a third of food produced in Europe ends up in the garbage, even though 80% of that was harmless and edible (in the USA, the share of disposed foods is even at 40%).

This is not just a problem because it wastes farmers' labor, fertilizer, use of agricultural land and transport costs, but also because organic waste in landfills produces large quantities of methane, a very harmful greenhouse gas.

While part of this waste already arises at the producers, for example the unsellable (not corresponding to the traders' demands) potatoes that are not gathered from the field, the majority of this food wastage takes place in private homes. A big part of this comes from mistakes in purchase, for example leftovers from birthday parties which can not be used in daily life, or full fridges right before the annual vacation.

Farmilio, a platform on which mostly small farmers and hunters offer their products locally, has taken on this issue from a marketplace perspective.

Under the name FoodSaving.me, and at the web address of the same name, not only retail traders and restaurants can post food that they can not or will not sell anymore, this option is also open for consumers.

“Meanwhile, there are so many amazing initiatives in this environment,” Christoph Dunkake, founder of Farmilio, explains. “Yesterday, I was at a FoodWaste dinner organized by the community of Horgen. The additional benefit that Farmilio can contribute here, is that we could offer a matured platform that can be used by all these local initiatives.”
