The tug of war continues

Rewe wants to take over Tengelmann departments in NRW

The courting for supermarket chain Kaiser's Tengelmann continues. Now, head of Rewe Alain Caparros has expressed his own interest in Tengelmann. “We could also just take over the departments in NRW” (North Rhine-Westphalia), said Caparros.

In the course of the planned fusion of Tengelmann and Edeka, Caparros is attempting whatever he can to stop the fusion. After the Federal Cartel Office declined the fusion, Edeka already filed an application for ministerial approval at the responsible federal minister of economy, Sigmar Gabriel (SPD). His decision on the matter is expected shortly.

With the declaration of only wanting to take over Tengelmann supermarkets in NRW< Rewe is deviating from its course thus far. So far the company has stated that they want to take over all 451 supermarkets themselves, and in this preserve all 16,000 work places. Caparros told the Süddeutsche Zeitung: Rewe is also open to partial solutions – also in North Rhine-Westphalia with the take-over of all departments.
