Italy: Donato Fanelli speaks up about table grape situation Apulia

Donato Fanelli, member of the Interbranch Table Grapes Organisation, has spoken with FreshPlaza before the next meeting with the Ministry on September 10, 2015.

The meeting will concern a promotional campaign for table grapes similar to that made for peaches and nectarines, which involved retailers and wholesalers.

"Most of the varieties have an excellent quality and low volumes, so it should be an excellent campaign... but it is not! Prices are 10-15% lower than last year, which was already an awful year."

And the situation does not look to be improving. "We have practically given away Victoria grapes for free, should we do that with the Italia and Red Globe varieties too? Then, when the campaign ends late October, who will we blame for this? The government or the Regions?"

"While it is true that the Public Administration has its faults and responsibilities, it is also true that we will not get out of this if we do no work together. We need to work a system starting with the small things, like providing the correct information to our clients regardless of whether they are retailers, markets or international platforms. If oil producers behaved like we do, petrol would cost less than water!"
