Peru: Seedless grapes for export

According to Juan Carlos Arbulu, a researcher from the University of Piura (UDEP), the adaptation of seedless grapes in the fields was generating great benefits for the region.

In that sense, he said the region now had protocols for the planting, adaptation, harvest and yields of the fruit for export. He also said that this allowed them to use fewer units of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium, and take better care of the environment.

"This type of grape was being grown in Ica and in other regions of Peru, but it had not been grown with the technical rigor required in a climate like that of Piura. The experience has served to encourage companies to plant in Chulucanas, Sullana and in the region of Lambayeque," he added.

The researcher said that by having managed to adapt it and to access the international market they have achieved increasing the planting area from 10 hectares, what the project initially covered, to 270 hectares of seedless varieties.

Arbulu emphasized that this increase in acreage generated greater economic benefits. He also stressed that producing seedless grape was more profitable than producing grapes with seeds.

Additionally, he stated, growing seedless grapes has generated more jobs per hectare with a higher percentage of female labor. "There is more work for the residents of the areas and more companies have started to invest in seedless table grapes for export," he said.
