As Mexican asparagus imports wind down and shipments from Peru ramp up, supplies of asparagus are light. As is typical for this time of year, those light supplies have made for a strong market.“Supplies are starting to pick up out of Peru,” said Dan Borer of Keystone Fruit Marketing. “Supplies are light right now, but they should pick up this fall and peak in October.” With the Peruvian import season still getting started, the market has been strong. Demand has been good, and on August 28, prices for an 11-pound carton of bunched green jumbo asparagus from Peru were between $32.00 and $34.00 at South Florida ports of entry.
“Movement has been good and pricing has been strong, which is very typical for this time of year,” said Borer. “No one can say for sure how the market will play out, but a normal pricing curve would see prices come down as supplies increase in the fall. I don't like to use the world “normal,” but we're excited that quality looks good and we'll have good promotional volumes coming.”
