BLE Market report CW 34/15

Apple assortment grows rapidly - Capsicum from the Netherlands is dominating

Apples
The assortment is growing rapidly. Ever more varieties are being made available. Besides the already established domestic Delbarestivale, Elstar and Jamba, for example Cox Orange, Royal Gala and Primerouge are newly storming into the assortment. From France, amongst others, Elstar and Gala are being imported; Granny Smith were available both bunched or loose in 18-kg crates. The presence of Italian shipments strengthened itself with dominant Royal Gala and Golden Delicious as well as the complementing Granny Smith and Gravensteiner. Tenroy from Italy often left something to be desired in terms of colour, and therefore became cheaper. Generally, the offers were more appealing compared to last week, so sales mostly went smoothly. Altogether, with the massive quantities, accommodation facilities could not keep up. Imports from overseas have a rounded off character as the season expires: with Braeburn and Pink Lady, New Zealand dominated events ahead of South Africa with its Cripps Pink and Granny Smith. Attention from the side of the customers was subdued; the ratings are thus only rarely modified.

Capsicum
Business was in the hands of Dutch fruit. As usual, ample movement could be registered with the prices: in general, the green and yellow products dropped, while the red mostly rose. Because of scarcity, only in Hamburg did demand for the green varieties rise. Turkish produce was less affected by the changes, though they occasionally got cheaper. Belgian batches have lost importance. The fluctuations regarding the ratings are partially based on the increasing competition from Poland, Spain starting with flowpacks of red or mixed offers. Hungarian alternatives in the form of pointed peppers were only available in Munich.

Pears
The palette of wares noticeably expanded, and the campaign from overseas was as good as over. The supply turned out to be too large for the low demand. Traders were frequently forced to lower their prices somewhat.

Table grapes
Italy dominated events with Victoria, Sugraone, Michele Paliere, Black Magic and Italia. Despite reduced supply, the demand up until now had to be reduced. In the end they succeeded in livening up business a little.

Strawberries
The supply of German fruits decreased. However, the colder weather prevented quantity- or demand determined price increases. With more friendly weather and an improved interest, demand has gradually increased from Wednesday onward.

Apricots
Both the juiciness and firmness of the products left much to be desired. The quotations of French batches rose a little here and there, while the Turkish imports sometimes dropped slightly.

Cherries
There were almost exclusively domestic parties, whose availability noticeably shrank. Although the quality was not always convincing, the levelling interest could be met without difficulty. Ratings normally remained constant.

Peaches and nectarines
Demand has increased a bit because of the better weather; especially with products with a larger diameter, access increased. Supply was limited however, which, combined with increasing demand, led to rising prices.

Plums
The immense quantities of national fruits made it difficult for imports to gain a foothold on the market. Because accommodation facilities generally improved as a result of the high temperatures during the week, the quotations often successively climbed upwards.

Kiwis
When the quality was convincing, the demands so far could raise slightly. Otherwise, with supply oriented to suit demand, courses will remain constant.

Lemons

Normally, supply did not succeed to fully meet demand, so that the ratings tended upward. Only in Frankfurt did it come to slight price reductions from Wednesday onward.

Bananas

Provision was sufficiently adjusted to the calm interest. Therefore, quotations generally barely moved.

Cauliflower
Due to demand-driven supplying of wares or due to the fact that the traders do not expect improvement in the sales numbers, on one hand prices remain stable; on the other hand they are fixating towards the weekend.

Lettuce
The quantities of coloured lettuces have reduced. Especially the course of fresh shipments tended increasingly upward, locally at least at the lower limits of their margins. Interest in endive grew.

Cucumbers
For snake cucumbers, both national products as well as assortment-complementing imports from the Netherlands and Belgium arrived in quantities that were too limited. Ratings went up. As a rule, the prices of mini cucumbers barely changed.

Tomatoes
At the start, demand was restrained; discounts were to increase access. From the middle of the week, the situation turned around: with dosed quantities, purchases regularly increased, which subsequently initiated price increases.

Onions
In terms of quality, only the Spanish onions in stock have improved. Because they are no longer adequately available, quotations clearly tended upward.
