Spain: Girona to increase apple production

Apple production in Girona (leading apple producer in Catalonia and Spain) will increase by 20% by 2018. Peach, nectarine and pear production will be partially replaced with apple production for 3 years.

Whilst Royal Gala harvest only began mid-August, the Girona apple has announced up to 70,000 tons of production (a stable volume since 2014).

To avoid a lack of peach sales, producers are turning to apples, of which 30% are exported (mainly to Europe, Maghreb and Central Africa). The Poma de Girona PGI includes the Golden, Red Delicious, Gala and Granny Smith varieties.
