US(MI): Storm leads to strong sweet corn prices

Heavy rain this season in and around the state of Michigan has caused sweet corn supplies to be light. While not all growers were hit evenly, overall lower volumes have made for high prices.

“We were pretty fortunate in Michigan, but there was a lot of rain to the north and to the south of us,” said Dave Miedema of Miedema Farms. “I know of a lot of growers who, unfortunately, have lost part of their crops, though we have been able to keep on schedule.”

Tight supplies have made for a strong market. Early-season prices were high, around the $15.00 per carton range, noted Miedema, though they have come down in recent weeks. On August 27, prices for a carton of sweet yellow corn from Michigan were between $10.00 and $11.95. Miedema believes the market will remain where it is at least through the Labor Day holiday.

“There's been good movement because of the lighter supplies,” said Miedema. “Last year, everyone had very good yields and the market was depressed. It was a struggle to move sweet corn last season, and we had to leave about 100 acres unharvested because we weren't able to sell it. But demand has been very good this year, and we're gearing up for the holiday push.”
