EU ministers of agriculture need to address price predicament

German, French farmer associations communicating

Chairman of the Deutsche Bauernverband (DBV), Joachim Rukwied and his French colleague Xavier Beulin (FNSEA) took the tense situation of the agricultural markets as a reason to narrowly adjust their agricultural-political market positions. At a meeting in Strasbourg on August 24, 2015, the agricultural chairmen settled on central measures with regard to the extraordinary session of the EU agricultural ministers on September 7, 2015.

Beulin and Rukwied mutually agreed that following the consequences of the Russian embargo, the farmers should not be left on their own. The Russian embargo constitutes one of the main causes of the price crash for all important agricultural products. Because it is about a political crisis, market-political measures are also required.

Rukwied and Beulin committed to a European strategy as a response to the current problems on the markets. Only by joint action, not in the last place with the European farmers’ association COPA, might the agricultural sector be sustainably strengthened.
