India: Pomegranate season hampered by erratic monsoon
Kalpesh Kivarsara from INI Farms said that the fruit’s visual appearance has been impacted, "The full colouration has not yet developed. So, even though the fruit is mature and has sufficient brix, it appears to be slightly immature."
The volumes don’t seem to have been affected by the weather so far. However, if there is a deficit in the rainfall, the quality would suffer and there would be a major impact on the sizes – the fruits will not be able to reach their full size if there is a water shortage in the last few weeks prior to the harvest.
Maharashtra is the primary pomegranate growing region. Karnataka has the next best quality. There is also a lot of new plantations in the states of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, however, according to Kalpesh, the quality is not up to the mark as the farmers are new to this crop.
INI Farms ship regularly to various destinations year round. last year the company launched a new range of consumer packing for loose pomegranate arils, which Kalpesh says have gone down well in the various markets.
The company is now working on convenience packs for pomegranates as well as bananas.
