Guy de Meyer, Demargo:

Leek prices very good for this time of year

Spirits are high in the leek market right now. According to Guy de Meyer from Demargro, sales are currently running quite smoothly, "Monday (8/24) we saw prices of around 60 to 65 cents per kilo for separate leeks, depending on the calibers. For this time of the year that is a really good price."

Dry summer
Guy says that export is doing very well, "At the moment there are Belgian leeks going to almost every European country. Due to the drought in recent months, the harvest in surrounding countries has been delayed, creating a strong demand for Belgian leeks." Guy expects this situation to continue for a while, "It's already been a very dry summer, and leek plants need a lot of water in order to grow properly."

Guy says that they have an advantage in Belgium: the plots on which they grow the leeks are not that large. This makes it easier to give the leeks extra water via a watering system. Demargro BVBA is ready to return to offering the full range of leeks to it's customers," says the exporter.
