HHLA: Hinterland strategy ensures growth in earnings

The Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) increased its operational result (EBIT) by 1.5 percent at 82.6 million €. The revenues went back by 1.8 percent at 585.1 million €. The container transports of the intermodal companies went down by 3.2 percent compared to the first half of last year, at 654 thousand standard containers (TEU). Container turnover in terminals Hamburg and Odessa decreased by 10.0 percent at 3.4 million TEU.

  • Operating results increase slightly by 1.5%
  • Turnover decreases slightly by 1.8%
  • Container transport reduced by 3.2%
  • Container turnover 10.0% under last year

“The Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG continues to face demanding general conditions. The growth of the Chinese economy is losing in dynamism, Russia and Ukraine remain in economic crises. We have nevertheless succeeded in slightly increasing the operational result of the concern. The largest growth driver of HHLA remains the business area Intermodal. Our investments in our own locomotives, wagons and hinterland terminals are meanwhile developing to their full effect and are considerably increasing our real net output ratio.

The operational result (EBIT) could more than double in Segment Intermodal. In the business area of containers however, we are observing a decreasing development in the review period. Thanks to our vertical assembly next to the transport chain, our business model of intelligent linking of container turnover, as well as our stable financial situation, we are maintaining our current general conditions successfully further on. We are however also taking notice of the fact that the dynamic of our growth under these conditions cannot reach the level of the years up until 2008 anymore. Therefore we are further working on optimizing our facilities, processes and structures, so that we will be able to respond even faster and more flexibly to changing market demands in the future” says HHLA CEO Klaus-Dieter Pieters.
