Gerry van Ooijen, Van Ooijen Citrus:

"Uruguayan citrus: slightly more skin damage, but better taste and color"

Van Ooijen Citrus has been importing oranges from Uruguay for seven consecutive years now, "Right now we have Salustiana's, Valencia's, Navels, Ellendales and lemons from Uruguay available," says Gerry van Ooijen. The importer has praised the quality of the Uruguayan product, "Compared to South Africa, Uruguayan oranges always have a little more skin damage, but they also have better taste and color."

Although the American market is now open for Uruguayan citrus as well, Gerry is not worrying about the volumes coming this way, "The market and risk factors will always be carefully looked at, which means we will always have citrus sent our way."

"Due to current weather conditions there is not too much citrus available right now, and supply and demand are in balance. Citrus sales have been doing well this summer, partly due to the weather, and not much will change in the coming weeks."
