US (NY): Cabbage spared from rain's effects
Though many crops throughout New York state and surrounding areas have been affected by recent rains, cabbage production has been largely spared. With production steady, prices have not shot up.
“Cabbage is the one crop that hasn't been affected by the rain,” said Keith Baskerville of Eden Valley Growers. “Rain can be a problem for a lot of crops because they can retain too much water and shelf life is hindered. But production of cabbage is pretty strong, and product looks really good.”
Steady production is meeting market demand, and prices have been on par with what's been seen at this time in previous years, noted Baskerville. On July 24, prices for a carton of round green cabbage were between $7.00 and $9.00 out of Western and Central New York.
“Prices aren't bad,” said Baskerville. “Red cabbage prices are a little higher, and we hope the market stays even like this through the fall.”
