American grows tree with 40 kinds of fruit

For nine years, American artist Sam Van Aken has worked on a fruit tree that produces 40 kinds of fruit. The roots of the work of art trace back to Sam's fascination for grafting. The American grew the tree by attaching new branches from various fruit trees to a rootstock every season. National Geographic shows how the artist works.

In 2011, the first work of art arose: the Tree of 40 Fruit. In spring, the tree has pink, white and purple blossoms, and in summer, plums, cherries and apricots are rub shoulders.

The artist plants the trees throughout the United States. "If people pass by the trees, they will wonder why the shape of the leaves differs, and why the colours are remarkably different."
