US (CA): Trend toward more flavorful grape varieties

California's table grape growers harvested one of their largest crops last season, and production this year could be on par with that. In addition to big volumes, growers are looking for new varieties that focus on better-tasting fruit.

“Right now a lot of older varieties, which are not as big or don't have as much flavor, are giving way to new varieties,” said Jared Lane of Stevco. “It's hard to judge a variety from year to year, but the biggest thing right now is the flavor. The industry is driven by flavor.” The size of the grape is the second biggest consideration that growers take into account when trying out new grape varieties. While there's no clear consensus as to what variety will be the next big thing out of California, the importance of flavor and size is clear.

“I think consumption of grapes is going to rise because of these new varieties that result in better fruit,” said Lane. “The quality looks good. Last year, some varieties were a little lighter because of the crop set, but this year's set was better.” The growing season suggests volumes could be on par with those from last year, or even a little better, according to Lane.

“Volume will depend on new varieties that aren't traced until after they're produced, so it's tough to say,” said Lane. “But I think we'll have the same amount of fruit as last year.”
