Lettuce prices fall again

In the beginning of this month lettuce prices experienced a huge upswing. Prices remained high until last week, but since July 20th prices have fallen. According to Jonathan Vandesande from Weiss exporters, the market is currently fairly normal, "Some of the production was damaged due to the heat and that is why prices were higher until last week. The situation has now stabilised."

Greenhouse vegetables more expensive again
There was a shortage of lettuce for a while. The production of lamb's lettuce, endive and other 'lettuce related' products were also affected by the heat. "The price of lettuce fell to 30 cents on July 20th, so the price is not that abnormal right now. Growers needed the higher prices after the poor spring. Now the prices are good for everyone." He says that most of the greenhouse grown vegetables have become more expensive, "First it was too hot for the production, now it is too dark. Eggplant, bell pepper and tomato prices are all rising."

On July 21st Belgium celebrates its national holiday, "We continue export, so our customers do not have to take the day off. Therefore, most customers order slightly more the day before. The volumes are not spectacular however because they are back on Wednesday. In addition, the weather is not very good right now and that does not stimulate supply."
