Chiloé: home of the potato

In 1834 Charles Darwin was astounded by the huge variety of potatoes on ChiloƩ. Andres Contreras, the Chilean potato expert estimated that of the 400 varieties, 286 varieties have roots on this island off the Chilean coast. This makes this piece of earth the home of 90% of the potato varieties on earth.

Enough reason for the United Nation to name ChiloƩ as one of the GIAHS: 'Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems' in 2012. The worldwide, agricultural heritage.
