Germany: Average asparagus, strawberry harvest this year

A few weeks ago, around midsummer, the asparagus season ended. And according to the German Federal Bureau of Statistics an area of 240 hectares gave a yield of over 900 metric tons of the loved vegetables. This year’s harvest was 3700 kg per hectare, about the same as the average of recent years. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the asparagus grow on 15 percent of the acreage, and in Germany on almost 18 percent. The open field strawberries will yield 13800 kg per hectare, according the initial estimations. Reaching a total yield of 7320 metric tons from the total 530 hectares.
The dry weather in May prevented an excellent achievement. In Germany the cultivation under plastic, for instance plastic tunnels, becomes increasingly popular.
An earlier harvest, independent of the weather and thus a higher yield are the advantages of this way of growing strawberries. The first results resulted in a yield of 845 metric tons of strawberries from a surface of 55 hectare. This brings the total yield to 8165 metric tons.
