Martijn van Damme, Dacomex:

Onion market waiting for bottom prices

The market for new onions is not doing well, "Since last week we have fully moved over to the new onion plants, but demand is still not high," says Martin van Damme. "The old onion season is long gone and the difference in price for the new onions, which start at a considerably higher price level, is making sales very difficult. This is making people in the onion market nervous, causing growers to supply significantly more onions. To increase demand, prices needs to stabilize first. They are waiting until the price hits rock bottom."

"We are hearing that the African market will not take any large volumes for now. Senegal will probably not be interested until the end of August, and countries like Mauritania have Dutch onions, partly due to old stocks, and local product, but barely any interest," says the trader. "There are some shipments going to England and the Caribbean region and there is some demand coming from the Far East, but whether that will actually lead to orders is another matter."

"The yields per acre are high after the drought. However, there are major differences between the properties, but they are being very well cared for. We are also seeing white rot this year; we will have to deal with that very carefully because we have a reputation to uphold," says Martijn.
