UK: Ackio appoints new GM

Fresh produce veteran Paul Tyrer has joined Ackio (UK) Limited as general manager.

Tyrer, who has over 20 years experience in the fresh produce sector, joins Ackio after a 16-year stint as general factory manager at Ross Young’s (United Biscuits).

Tyrer’s brief as general manager is to oversee operations and further challenge the production environment, ensuring Ackio operates under the safety, hygiene, quality and cost fundamentals, which are currently certified to BRC grade A* standards, while continually extending the capabilities of its unique service proposition.

The news of Tyrer’s appointment comes as Ackio recently made one of its most significant moves in the fresh produce sector – sourcing and configuring a device that allows blueberries to be shipped loose and in bulk, while previously they were packed into punnets at source. The solution takes up less shipping space, reduces costs, and provides the flexibility to pack in different punnet sizes in the UK in response to market demand.

Ackio was the first to bring this equipment to the UK and it has since upgraded the device to pack cherries and a new range of snack-pots, allowing the relatively small opening of the pots – compared to the traditional fruit punnet – to be filled to an exact weight. The packing lines have also been adapted to allow the upright, unstable snack-pots to be packed efficiently, accurately and at high speed. The machine uses some of Ackio’s existing high tech, quality systems, such as vision-based checking of individual berries for internal and external defects, and air pressure tests for softness.
